SOPHIE CALLE
Context:
Sophie Calle is born on the 9th October 1953 and is a French photographer. Calle's work is based on the French literacy movement called "Oulip" and she also demonstrates human vulnerability as well as assessing identity and intimacy of random strangers. In 2005 Sophie Calle has taught as a professor of film and photography at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland . Her work was exhibited in different museums such as Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and Paula Cooper Gallery in New York.
Content:
Sophie Calle's work is mainly captured in black and white setting than in colour as she was based in the 19s. She uses black and white photography to present the concept of identity and using no colour in her photographs to reflect the type of colouring certain vintage photographers used in their work. I particularly like the composition she has used in her photographs as she combined compositions such as close up and captured the person from far away to create a sequence that shows that the subject( the person) is travelling around and she is there to capture those moments . When it comes lighting , I think she has used the daylight to add more exposure to her pictures as you can see from the picture above the subject usually tends wear grey or darker coloured clothing which may make the picture have less exposure if some form of lighting wasn't used. This also relates back to tones as the sequence sometimes goes from light to dark depending on where she is standing with the camera.
Concept:
When it comes Calle's photographs as stated before she usually captures her photographs in a sequence format to show a process of stalking other people's lives. I think her photography really depicts street photography as some of her pictures are taken through freestyling but also subtly thinking about elements to include such as identity as the people in her image is wearing clothing that would resemble the person's job. To add on , her photography based on identity is shown through a narration as the subject ( the person in the photograph) is at different location each time and it shows that she is almost investigating them and their lives. I personally think that Sophie Calle's work of "Suite Venitienne" is really interesting as it seem both intentional but also that she is subtly thinking of others things to include in her work
