Keith Arnatt : Rubbish Tip
Context:
Keith Arnatt was a conceptual photographer who was born in Oxford in 1930.He went to art school in Oxford where he met his wife .He later on studied at the Royal Academy. He taught art in the 60s and 70s at Liverpool School of Art and then Manchester School of Art. Arnatt's early work was prominently featured in significant shows in the U.S and Europe , although he had vital early exhibitions in London at the Tate Hayward Gallery and the Whitechapel Art Gallery. In the 80s his work was consequential to the then fashionable revisionary interest in photography. He had a first and significant retrospective exhibition at the photographers' gallery in 1989. In 2008, Arnatt sadly passed away due to an extended period of the illness , depression.
Content:
Keith Arnatt captures photographs of rubbish tip using various compositions such as birds eye view in the first and third image and he also adjusts the camera in a fill the frame and focal point in the middle image so that the pasta and the other pieces of food are demonstrated .These are used to present the tubular shapes and the colours of the food as it occurs from lighter to a sort of darker colours like beige and brown .
Concept:
The photographer focused on discarded food that has been dumped at a local tip which is the reason it is named "rubbish tip" . The bags reflect and diffuse the surrounding daylight which is highlighting the varying hues of rubbish so that the scenes appear brightly coloured and partly abstract. I think the photographer is trying to express that beauty lies upon different settings by using framing techniques , colour and lighting that enhances the visual appeal from the photograph .This artwork makes me feel intrigued as context is vital and important to develop the thought instead of creating assumptions.
