Jane Fulton Alt:The Burn
Context:
Jane Fulton Alt is an American photographer who was born in 26th May 1951 in Chicago illinois in the U.S.She explores the issues of love , loss and spirituality in her work and she also began exploring the visual arts while pursuing her career as a clinical social worker. She received her B.A from the University of Michigan and her M.A from the University of Chicago. The burnt portfolio was printed in multiple publications worldwide.
Content:
The captured pictures of the burnt atmosphere is to show violence , anger and the destructive force on reducing the vegetation and the elements of the burn consisting of mystery and luminosity .The colours of the images which are bright orange and red and darker & lighter tone as you progress viewing the images to indicate a contrast towards the good and bad. The photographer uses a fill the frame and a balanced composition in the middle image to emphasise that the burning is offering a sense of oppression and a suffocating heat towards nature releasing smell as one of the senses.
Concept:
These pictures were taken by Jane due to the burn's visual and expressive potential as well as the evoked themes in her core work. She portrays a metaphor that life and death are not opposed but are harmonised as a single process to be embraced as one. In my point of view without knowing the context these artworks give a contrast between the good and the evil as for instance , the flowers are seen as radiating positivity but in the first picture it is slowly being consumed by the burn making it turn darker in order to represent evilness due to the agony it is facing from the gentle burn.
